School Curriculum

The Farm to School program in Alaska includes any activity that connects students, teachers, and the school food service with product grown and produced in Alaska. This includes, but is not limited to;

• Increasing Alaska grown food sales to the school meal program

• Providing information for school garden development

• Promoting Alaska Agriculture in the Classroom curriculum/education

• Promoting farm visits

• Participation in programs that educate youth about the food system

• State-wide contests promoting farm to school activities 

• Local lunch celebrations

• Resource / marketing development

• Supporting existing farm / fish to school efforts

• Facilitating discussion between school food service and food producers

• The Great Garden Detective Adventure - a standards-based gardening nutrition curriculum for Grades 3 and 4.

• Harvest of the Month - a monthly focus on indigenous and cultivated foods in Alaska.

• Farm to School Youth Leadership Curriculum - for 11th and 12th Grades.

• Potato Planting Activity - can be adapted for any grade K -12.

• Carrot Seed Tape Activity - can be adapted for any grade K-12

• Local Food Hero - an activity to learn about local food hero's in your community Local Food Hero Template

•  Alaska Ag in the Classroom - lessons that can be downloaded and used in the classroom

• Alaska Cooperative Extension Service - lots of fantastic educational publications for your growing questions through the University of Alaska Fairbanks.

• Alaska 4-H Program - find a club in your area or learn how to start one in your community.

• Alaska FFA Association - a great resource for agricultural education students. The National Future Farmer's of America (FFA) Organization is specifically a career and technical student organization, based on middle and high school classes that promote and support agricultural education.

• Alaska National Farm to School Month October 2017 - celebrating National Farm to School month, we created an Alaska weekly focus on agriculture, including an indigenous food focus on Wednesdays. Curriculum with classroom education and recipe ideas are included each week.
